Nanaimo Food Vendors Getting Kicked Out of The Kitchen

NANAIMO - Food Vendors and the City of Nanaimo are reaching a boiling point when it comes to access to prime waterfront real estate.

Food carts are becoming increasingly popular in cities across North America as an alternative food option, offering unique ethnic cuisine in popular locations. However, the City of Nanaimo has yet to jump on board with the movement, electing to stand pat with their existing contracts and policies for city owned parks and beach fronts.

Currently, only one vendor is allowed to operate and serve food on a daily basis at Nanaimo's Maffeo Sutton park as part of a six-year contract the City signed with a private third-party back in 2010. Some prospective food vendors in the harbour city feel that the popular summer park is an ideal location for a variety of different ethnic food trucks.

Other prospective food vendors in the Harbour City are looking into opening up locations in other areas, such as Departure Bay, but so far have had their applications bogged down in political red tape. Sheila Dubroy and Oswaldo Aviles Bahena moved to Nanaimo with plans to open up a vegan-Mexican food stand in Departure Bay but have elected to take their operation to Parksville after failing to receive access to the Beachfront parking lot from the city.

Dubroy says "they accomplished more in two days with the City of Parksville than what they were trying to accomplish in Nanaimo for the past six months."




The City of Nanaimo says they welcome feedback on the issue from users and are currently drafting a review of the cities food cart policy.
